Hello all,

I have a Sony MD Player and would like to put my tunes onto my beloved HD but does anyone know of any free software available to help me do this. I don't currently have anything useful on my PC and just recently got re-acquainted with my MD after a 4 yr absence ( my brother borrowed it and after 4 yrs still hadn't done what he wanted to do which I believe is the same as what I want to do now, so was of no use ).

I have done some searches and have found several guides on how to do it but all the software quoted has a price tag attached to it.Was hoping for a simple way to back up my music but most guides I've read seem very long winded requiring me to pause the MD, press record on PC, unpause MD, pause again when song has finished, stop recording etc etc and then having to rename all the files which I believe will be in .aac and then convert to MP3 or other format.. phew!!! that was hard enough just to type.

Well I know that you peeps out in XDA land are bright clever types and was hoping for some help, so....HELP.... :)

For the last 2 days I have been using andriod on my HD2 :D

So far I am impressed with it. It has taken me a while to get used to the interface. However now I have managed to set my notifications up and a few other settings I am happy.

Google Navigation rocks , just need to go somewhere a bit further than work to try it out properly.

It is still running off the SD card so I do notice it running slow sometimes. Each time I reboot It does boot winmo then I have to delete 3 folders before starting android.

The only other thing is battery use is bit heavy and need a charger handy to keep her topped up.

Otherwise as this is still early days it is stable and most stuff works. Top marks top the guys working on it.

Hit the android threads on xda-devs for more details.

Go on Martin you know you want to try.

Hi there, this is a very basic question having got a hand-me-down Sony Experia X1 which is now flashed with Windows mobile 6.

The battery life isn't too great on the phone once data services/3G is left on permanently and I was hoping to improve this by scheduling when it turns this on/off. The hope is that it will automatically stop the data services during bedtime i.e. 12am to 6am. Essentially what I need is a "Nodata" app which can be set on/off according to time.

Is there any app on the market, preferably free, which anyone has tried which does this?

Thanks in advance.

A recent Android update for owners of the Vodafone branded HTC Desire, left a lot of customers with a nasty little surprise. Instead of the awaited upgrade to Android 2.2 (FroYo), what they got was Android 2.1 with even more branding and the addition of many megabytes worth of bloatware, including links to dating web-sites and Vodafones "360 App store" (which isn't on-line as yet).

This resulted in a storm among the customers and forum members in the Vodafone forum. Forum members were rightly very put off that the update was so full of branding and bloatware, and also that it wasn't as expected, the FroYo upgrade. First off it began in the forum, then moved on to e-mails to the management of Vodafone and reports to the national Press. Within days of the update being offered, Vodafone removed the update (which is OTA rather than via PC) altogether. Literally thousands of customers were complaining about what they saw as a rip-off from their operator. Many claimed that they would be getting out of their contracts as soon as possible. And in the meantime, the posts in the Vodafone forum grow and grow (you can find the thread HERE).

The good news is, Vodafone has paid attention to what has been said in it's forum! Firstly, by the rapid removal of the Over-the-Air update that was causing all the fuss, and now secondly, an announcement from Vodafone that they will be releasing FroYo in the next 7-10 days, with MINIMAL branding and no bloatware.....

We’ve listened to feedback from customers on a number of points around the recent 360 Android 2.1 update and made some changes to the roll out plan.

The Android 2.2 update for Vodafone HTC Desire users will be based on the HTC open market version of the software and we will customise it to ensure our network settings are installed.

For customers who have downloaded the recent 360 update for Android 2.1, we can confirm that the Android 2.2 update will remove the 360 applications and will leave the homepage and bookmarks on your current settings.

Customers who want to access the 360 services will be able to do so once the Android 2.2 compatible version is available and, in the meantime, can now download apps like 360 People from the Android Marketplace.

We plan to make the 360 apps available in a separate update for the HTC Desire at a later date, giving customers the choice to download it.

We will let you know when the date for delivery of the Android 2.2 update is finalised, but, subject to testing, we expect this to be in 7-10 days time.

This seems to be a big step in the right direction. The most positive side of this news to me is that when the customers make enough noise and don't sit back and let the operators roll over them, that they will be heard. At least in this case, Vodafone saw that they had unleashed a sh#t-storm that was going to lose them a wad of cash and more important, market placement. Thank you Vodafone for listening and acting accordingly. But the BIGGER thanks go to the wave of Customers that sat up and said "No!" Customer Power is not dead. Long live the consumer!!

PS: Shame that Apple haven't followed suit and listened to their customers regarding iOS4. But that's another story.

My thanks to XDASite members SeanyC and SmithBill for bringing this to our attention.

Vodafone have rolled out an update for the Desire which owners thought was Froyo. Turns out it was just an update to the current firmware with a load of Vodafone branding and apps/malware incorporated.

Obviously this has lit the blue touchpaper and its all going off over at the Vodafone eforum.

Apparently the update installed a load of 360 apps which eat into your 500MB to the tune of about 20MB/day which means most people will be billed for extra usage. These apps will not use wifi only mobile data:eek:

Also browser homepage has been changed and a load of new bookmarks including some to adult dating sites apparently.

So glad I'm impatient and flashed a standard ROM to get Froyo before this happened. ;)

It is no longer illegal to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod. In the US, the US Copyright Office decreed that Apples claim that copyright was being infringed was incorrect and "The user is not engaging in any commercial exploitation of the firmware, at least not when the jailbreaking is done for the user's own private use of the device."

Apple replied with, "As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably." Well, anyone who has been following my rantings of late about the pile of wombat-cack that Apple call iOS 4 and what it has done to my iPod, will appreciate that my personal feelings to this reply are: "Are you fecking serious!?!"

And as is the way of the world of electronics, no sooner is Jailbreaking officially stamped as legal, the community has reacted with lightening speed and waved a couple of fingers under the noses of Apple. Hardly has the ink dried and there is already software to break you iToy. The most straight forward of these being Jailbreakme (point your iPhone/iPod browser at www.jailbreakme.com). Just go to their site and "slide to jailbreak". I have just tried this myself and it took around 5 mins to do. And all it took was one slide of the finger. So far, no down-side noticed. The last time I attemped to jailbreak my iPod, it took me over an hour and downloads from various sites to get the files that I needed. Jailbreakme.com does everything from one site and in no time at all. And if you don't like it, just restore via iTunes and you're back to the official software from the Fruit store.

 type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"

And here you can see an iPhone 4 and an iPod being jailbroken in record time.

Well, it got to the point where I was so cheesed off with iOS4 on my iPod that I decided to downgrade back to iOS 3.1.3 last night. Though iOS4 has a lot of good new features (though old-hat to WinMo and even Android users), I found it to be sluggish to the point of wanting to throw it at the wall. Also, it was forever losing a wi-fi signal even though I was sat nearly on top of the router. What I wanted was the old OS speed and stability back and was willing to trade it off for the only advantage (for me) of iOS4, "Folders".

So, iPod docked on the PC and iTunes fired up and running. Hit the "Restore Factory Settings" button and waited for it to do it's thing. After about 20 mins, the flash was finished (it took nearly 4 hours to flash iOS4 to my iPod 2G!!). And the result? Yup, I still have iOS4, no sign of OS 3.1.3. Oh, and no sign of my music library either! Oh, the apps are all restored but as soon as it starts to copy my music library across, iTunes (v9.2.0.16) freezes and refuses to respond.

I should like to take a moment here to thank all at Apple for the well produced and ground-breaking evolution that is iOS4. But I won't, because that would be an outright porkie-pie. What iOS is, in my humble opinion, is not really repeatable on this site (yes I own the site and can say what I want, but sometimes, even I have limits on how acidic I can be). Suffice to say that between a mountain of expletives the words "Rush-job" and "Market Expectation" would no doubt appear. Anyway, thanks to Apple, I now have an iPod that can't play music (the reason I bought it) and can only open iTunes Store if it feels like connecting to wi-fi, and even then, only at a snails pace.

With any luck, Apple may do some actual testing on their next OS and hardware (Antenna and glass cases) before launching their next anti-christ on the market. Not just sit back and say how pretty it is and that 1.7 million fan-boys will buy it in the first 3 days and to hell with the consequences. Sorry folks, Apple sucks!!

BIG TIME!

At a recent press conference by Apple, it was announced that Apple will offer a free Bumper to all owners of an iPhone 4, or a refund to customers who have already bought a Bumper. In addition, any iPhone 4 owners that are dissatisfied with their new toy can get a full refund if they return it to an Apple shop. The offer applies to anyone having bought an iPhone 4 up to and including 30th September (so they are still going to be selling defect phones for another two months!!!!) OK, that's a start. Furthermore, Steve Jobs said (referring to the so-called "Antenna-gate" debacle);

"We will re-examine this in September and decide whether to keep going, or maybe we will have a better idea."

And this is what has got the Rumour Mill grinding. WHAT is going to happen 30th September? Some of the pundits are now expecting an iPhone 5. More likely (if anything, in my opinion..) an iPhone "4.5" with a new antenna solution.

At least Apple are doing something about it. I have noticed that with my HD2 that if I hold it in a certain way, inside a lead-lined box, no less than 5 meters underwater in a concrete swimming pool, I too have a problem getting more than two bars worth of reception. And what are HTC doing about that??!??
The game costs 5 dollars. I bought it yesterday and it is a pretty good game. [link]
