O2 UK do not appear to be showing the HTC HD2 for sale on their website. Is it available for upgrades or not? Can someone give me an idea of upgrade costs? (ideally on a 18month £15-25/month tariff with data and 200txts or more)
Its available SIM free for £481.26 at http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=2463 I'm on a Simplicity10 tariff with 250txts, 75mins and free data for £10/month. So if staying on that tariff and buying an unlocked handset from HandTec works out cheaper than upgrading to a higher monthly tariff for 18months, then thats what i'll do. Happy New Year! Bill |

I've been reading some of the user reviews of the HTC HD2 on Amazon and they seem to indicate that the HD2 looks better than it operates (fat fingers on an onscreen keyboard, Excel navigation, battery life on an always on connection etc). The reviews have put me off it somewhat. They suggested the Nokia N900 might be better.
Looking at the N900 on Vodafone it too seems to have issues. I'm now thinking iPhone 3GS might be an option. Any 'useability' comments on the HD2, N900 or iPhone 3GS? Bill |

Though I hate to say it Bill, the iPhone 3Gs has a lot going for it (even when you get past the hype).
One thing is that Apple up-grade the OS each time they bring a new model on the market, and owners of older models get the up-grade too (though obviously only as far as the software permits). The virtual keyboard is very easy to use even with fat fingers - even easier in landscape mode. Augmented Reality is going to be the next big buzz-word and the iPhone can already handle it. But on the minus side you need to remember that the memory can not be increased; no slot for expansion cards, so you need to go large at the start or move files around a bit from time to time (I have an 8GB iPod Touch and wish that I had gone for the 16GB version, but at the time I thought it would do me nicely. It is however enough for 986 song titles and about 40 apps). You can not change the battery without voiding the warranty. Customisability such as we have with WM is non-existent, unless you jailbreak an iPhone. And there are currently more viren for the iPhone than for any other smartphone, due to it's popularity and cult status. You mentioned the "Always-On" internet connection with the HD2, same applies with the iPhone; probably even more so as most apps are internet based, so get a contract with sufficient web time/data traffic. That said, it is also a phone that I would consider (again), come the time to change my contract. For usability, it is excellent. Multi-touch is OK but a bit over-hyped in my opinion. And I shall wait and see what WM7 brings with it this year. Supposed to finally surface in 2010. The HTC HD2 is so far the only WM phone that is confirmed as getting the WM 7 up-grade when the OS finally arrives. But how long do you want to wait? No doubt Apple will have generation 4 of the iPhone ready to launch by the middle of this year too. EDIT: Here's an interesting thread that I found at www.modaco.com. Various members of the site discussing the pros and cons of a move away from or sticking with WM. Some interesting thoughts and reasoning. But there is no particular direction. I think that with WM you either love it or hate it. Anyway, have a read, it may help in your decision making. What makes you stick with Windows Mobile? |

Thanks M@rtyn. Currently i'm leaning towards the Nokia N900. Screen size isnt as big at the HTC HD2 but it seems to more 'polished' than the HD2. The iPhone, although very capable, does seem to more geared towards mass media market.
I might wait and see what price Vodafone come up with for the N900 (its on their Coming Soon list). The HD2 is now only available from Vodafone on a business tariff. The HD2 has disappeared from Orange but is available on some pretty good tariffs from T-Mobile. Bill |

Hmmm.... couple of days ago there was a note on the HTC Hong Kong site that the HD2 was going to get a WM7 up-grade for free. That now seems to have been retracted and no one is sure if that will now happen at all, so maybe not a good idea to get the HD2 on the assumption of the up-grade (though otherwise it seems to be applauded as THE best smartphone out there at the moment, despite WinMo).
Had a look at the N900 on the net this morning and wasn't overly impressed myself, but that was only from looking at a few pics. I used to be a total Nokia-head, but that was then and this is now. Bill, in a way, I envy you getting a new phone and making a choice what to get. But on the other hand, I'm glad its you and not me, as there are so many good phones out there right now that the choice is hard to make. iPhone may only be a trendy fashion accessory but it actually does have some good points; ask Noney. Happy hunting! |
